Why Do I Keep Attracting the Wrong People?

Counselling for Relastionship Patterns and Self-Worth in Inverness and Elgin

Have you ever found yourself saying:

"I can't believe I've ended up here again."

Different person.

The same heartbreak.

The same anxiety.

The same feeling of chasing someone who can't quite give you what you need.

Eventually, you start asking yourself:

Why do I keep attracting the wrong people?

First of all, we want you to know something.

There is nothing wrong with you.

You are not broken.

And you are not "bad at relationships."

Very often, the relationships we choose make perfect sense when we understand where our patterns began.

Why Does Unhealthy Love Feel Familiar?

The way we experience love as children often shapes what feels normal as adults.

If love was inconsistent, distant, unpredictable or something you had to work hard for, your nervous system may have learned that love comes with anxiety.

So later in life:

  • Calm can feel unfamiliar.
  • Consistency can feel boring.
  • Emotionally unavailable people can feel exciting.
  • Healthy relationships can almost feel too easy to trust.

Not because you want to be hurt.

But because your mind naturally recognises what feels familiar.

Even when it isn't healthy.

Is It Love... Or Is It Anxiety

Sometimes what we call chemistry is actually anxiety.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I constantly worry about losing them?
  • Am I waiting for texts that never come?
  • Do I overthink everything they say?
  • Am I changing myself to keep them happy?
  • Do I feel more anxious than secure?

If the answer is yes, this isn't a sign that you love too much.

It may be a sign that old emotional wounds are being activated.

Because healthy love shouldn't leave you constantly questioning your worth.

Relationship Red Flags We Often Ignore

When our self-worth is low, we sometimes focus more on being chosen than asking:

"Is this relationship actually good for me?"

Some warning signs include:

  • Feeling anxious more than happy
  • Walking on eggshells
  • Constant criticism
  • Jealousy disguised as love
  • Always being the one apologising
  • Ignoring your own needs to keep the peace
  • Feeling emotionally drained instead of emotionally safe

You deserve more than that.

You deserve to feel respected.

Heard.

Safe.

Loved for who you are.

The Good News? Patterns Can Change

The fact that you've repeated unhealthy relationship patterns doesn't mean you always will.

Patterns are learned.

And they can be unlearned.

Counselling can help you:

  • Understand why you are drawn to certain relationships
  • Build healthier boundaries
  • Improve self-worth and confidence
  • Recognise red flags earlier
  • Learn what healthy love really looks and feels like
  • Stop confusing anxiety with genuine connection

Most importantly, counselling can help you stop abandoning yourself in order to be loved by someone else.

How Counselling Can Help

At Change Your World Wellbeing Centre, we provide confidential, person-centred counselling for people who are tired of repeating the same painful relationship patterns.

Together we can help you:

  • Understand where your relationship patterns began
  • Strengthen your self-worth and confidence
  • Develop healthy boundaries
  • Build more secure and fulfilling relationships
  • Recognise unhealthy behaviours earlier
  • Create lasting emotional wellbeing

Together, we'll explore how these patterns are affecting your life today and help you begin making choices from a place of self-worth rather than fear.

Because love should never require you to shrink yourself.

And you are not too much.

You never were.

Take the First Step

If you're ready to break free from unhealthy relationship patterns, you don't have to do it alone.

Change is possible.

Healthy relationships are possible.

And it all begins with recognising your own worth.

Take the first step towards healthier relationships—with others and with yourself.
